بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

These were the verses mentioned by Shaykh `Abdullah bin Bayyah in his lecture on Anger Management, which he recommended to be recited whenever provoked to anger and whenever one seeks calm and tranquility or feels overwhelmed by the stresses and pressures of life. These verses were mentioned in this context by Murtada al-Zabidi in his commentary on Imam al-Ghazzali’s Ihya’ and by other scholars.

In these days, when there is so much to unsettle the soul and create disharmony in the spirit, we pray that the recitation of and reflection on these verses can be a source of healing and comfort. May Allah bless and reward everyone who recites them.

وَقالَ لَهُمْ نَبِيُّهُمْ إِنَّ آيةَ مُلْكِهِ أَنْ يَأْتِيَكُمُ التّابُوتُ فِيهِ سَكِينَةٌ مِنْ رَبِّكْمْ وَبَقِيَّةٌ مَمّا تَرَك آلُ مُوسَى وَآلُ هارُونَ تَحْمِلُهُ الْمَلائِكَةُ إِنَّ في ذلِكَ لآيةً لَكُمْ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ مُؤْمِنِينَ البقرة : 248

2:248 And (further) their Prophet said to them: “A sign of his authority is that there shall come to you the Ark of the Covenant, with (an assurance) therein of security from your Lord, and the relics left by the family of Moses and the family of Aaron, carried by angels. In this is a sign for you if you indeed have faith.”

ثُمَّ أَنْزَلَ اللهُ سَكِينَتَهُ عَلى رَسُولِهِ وَعَلَى الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَأَنْزَلَ جُنُوداً لَمْ تَرَوْها وَعَذَّبَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا وَذلِكَ جَزاءُ الْكافِرِينَ التوبة : 26

9:26 But God did pour His tranquility on the Messenger and on the Believers, and sent down forces which you perceived not: He punished the deniers of faith; thus does He recompense those without faith.

إِلا تَنْصُرُوهُ فَقَدْ نَصَرَهُ اللهُ إِذْ أَخْرَجَهُ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا ثانيَ اثْنَينِ إِذْ هُما في الْغارِ إذْ يَقُولُ لِصاحِبِهِ لا تَحْزَنْ إِنَّ اللهَ مَعَنا فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ سَكِينَتَهُ عَلَيْهِ وَأَيَّدَهُ بِجُنُودٍ لَمْ تَرَوْها وَجَعَلَ كَلِمَةَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا السُّفْلَى وَكَلِمَةُ اللهِ هِيَ الْعُلْيا وَاللهُ عَزِيزٌ حَكِيمٌ التوبة : 40

9:40 If you do not help (your leader): verily God did indeed help him, when the deniers of faith drove him out: he had no more than one companion; they two were in the cave, and he said to his companion, “Have no fear, for God is with us.” Then God sent down His tranquility upon him, and strengthened him with forces that you did not perceive, and humbled to the depths the word of the deniers of faith. But the word of God is exalted to the heights: for God is Mighty, Wise.

هُوَ الَّذِي أَنْزَلَ السَّكِينَةَ في قُلُوبِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ لِيَزْدادُوا إِيماناً مَعَ إِيمانِهِمْ وَللهِ جُنُودُ السَّمَواتِ وَالأَرْضِ وَكانَ اللهُ عَلِيماً حَكِيماً الفتح : 4

48:4 It is He Who sent down tranquility into the hearts of the believers, that they may add faith to their faith; for unto God belong the forces of the heavens and the earth; and God is Omniscient, Wise.

لَقَدْ رَضِيَ اللهًُ عَنِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ إِذْ يُبايِعُونَكَ تَحْتَ الشَّجَرَةِ فَعَلِمَ ما في قُلُوبِهِمْ فَأَنْزَلَ السَّكِينَةَ عَلَيْهِمْ وَأَثابَهَمْ فَتْحاً قَرِيباً الفتح : 18

48:18 God’s good pleasure was on the believers when they swore fealty to you under the tree: He knew what was in their hearts, and He sent down tranquility to them; and He rewarded them with a speedy victory.

إِذْ جَعَلَ الذَّينَ كَفَرُوا في قُلُبوبِهِمِ الْحَمِيَّةَ حَمِيَّةَ الْجاهِلِيَّةِ فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ سَكِينَتَهُ عَلَى رَسُولِهِ وَعَلَى الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَأَلْزَمَهُمْ كَلِمَةَ التَّقْوَى وَكانُوا أَحَقَّ بِها وَأَهْلَها وَكانَ اللهُ بِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ عَلِيماً الفتح : 26

48:26 While the deniers of faith harbored zealotry in their hearts- the zealotry of the days of ignorance,- God sent down His tranquility to His Messenger and to the believers, and made them adhere to the command of self-restraint; and they were well entitled to it and worthy of it. And God has full knowledge of all things.

Transliteration of the Verses:

248. Waqala lahum nabiyyuhum inna ayata mulkihi an ya/tiyakumu alttabootu feehi sakeenatun min rabbikum wabaqiyyatun mimma taraka alu moosa waalu haroona tahmiluhu almala-ikatu inna fee thalika laayatan lakum in kuntum mu/mineena

26. Thumma anzala Allahu sakeenatahu AAala rasoolihi waAAala almu/mineena waanzala junoodan lam tarawhaththaba allatheena kafaroo wathalika jazao alkafireena waAAa

40. Illa tansuroohu faqad nasarahu Allahu ith akhrajahu allatheena kafaroo thaniya ithnayni ith huma fee alghari ithsahibihi la tahzan inna Allaha maAAana faanzala Allahu sakeenatahu AAalayhi waayyadahu bijunoodin lam tarawha wajaAAala kalimata allatheena kafaroo alssufla wakalimatu Allahi hiya alAAulya waAllahu AAazeezun hakeemun yaqoolu li

4. Huwa allathee anzala alssakeenata fee quloobi almu/mineena liyazdadoo eemanan maAAa eemanihim walillahi junoodu alssamawati waal-ardi wakana Allahu AAaleeman hakeeman

18. Laqad radiya Allahu AAani almu/mineena ith yubayiAAoonaka tahta alshshajarati faAAalima ma fee quloobihim faanzala alsakeenata AAalayhim waathabahum fathan qareeban
